If ever he accidentally deviates into preife, he does it that his enfuing blame may fall with the greater weight; he adorns an author with a few flowers, as the antients thofe iviétims which they were ready to facrifice: he (indies criticifm as if it extended only to difpraife; a praflice, which, when molt fuccefsful, is lead defirable. A painter might jufily be thought to have a perverfi: imagination, who fhould delight only to draw the de formities and dil'tortions of human nature, which, when executed by the melt malterly hand, {trike the beholder with molt horror. It is ufual with envious critics to attack the writings of others, becaufe they are good.
