Excerpt from Engineering for Masonry Dams
IN reviewing this book the reader will probably be impressed with the fact that many of the fundamental assumptions of design are based on very obscure data. This is particularly true regard ing uplift pressure, ice pressure, and the distribution of stresses in high dams.
It is believed, however, that such assumptions are all on the side of safety; for each of the recorded failures of masonry dams may be attributed to a violation of one or more of the standard rules on which the theory is based.
