Excerpt from The Edinburgh Academy Register: A Record of All Those Who Have Entered the School Since Its Foundation in 1824

Such is a concise and authentic account - the locus classicus on the subject of the genesis of the edinburgh academy, and it need be supplemented here in only a few particulars. The word Academy,' it may be premised, was originally applied in Scotland to a class of institution called into being in the latter half of the eighteenth century by the growing demand for a more practical kind of education than the old burgh grammar schools supplied. By the end of the century the academies and the grammar schools had in most places coalesced, so that the name of Academy had come to signify a school in which the endowed and proprietary characters were combined. Typical examples were the Perth Academy, founded in 1760, and united with the grammar school in 1807, andthe Ayr Academy, founded in 1794.
