Excerpt from Meg McIntyres Raffle and Other Stories: And Other Stories
Tickets Gents, 50 cents. Ladies, 25 cents. Dancing,8 till 3. Mrs. Mcintyre.
The earliest arrivals were three men, more or less mellow on their week's wages. They had gone from their work to Geoghegan's bar-room, where the free lunch was so ample that it was not necessary for them to go home to supper. They were Jerry Sullivan, lean, witty, and garrulous, in or out of his cups; Patsy Moran, an irish-american, educated in the public schools, who piqued himself on his Americanism and his book-learning; and Buck Rafferty, a heavy, broken-nosed, ugly-looking bruiser, with a heart like a little child's, and never more like than when its action was stim ulated by drink. It was about half-past seven when these three appeared. They straight way demanded beer with a bravado that would have done credit to the three musketeers. Mrs. Mcintyre did not propose serving beer until later in the evening, but she filled up a glass apiece, as the easiest way to keep them within bounds, forbidding them to ask for more as she did so.
