On the basis of a critical survey of earlier papers it is shown that the results obtained in these papers are insufficiently justified. A rigorous solution of the problem is given. It is also shown that in the limiting case of very high frequencies the solution takes on a form which corresponds to the approximation yielded by geometrical Optics.
