It is to be hoped that this little treatise will be found a help in time of need by all who go down to the sea in ships, and that they will be enabled by its aid to do readily what has been regarded as for them impossible, viz., find the centring and total errors of their Sextants. The subject of centring error is one that has been too long neglected in actual, practice: it deserves, on the contrary, the close attention of every careful navigator. So long, too, as the Sextant 13 used on board ship, it ought to be above reproach and as perfect as possible.
