The Charter of 1564 constituted the Merchants Adven lturers a corporation with a perpetual succession, the right to sue and to be sued, to hold and sell property, etc. It must not be supposed, however, that this instrument created the Society. That had been accomplished by a slow steady growth extending over several centuries. It does not, there fore, mark the origin of the Society it simply makes it a corporate body, establishing it on a legal basis, with definite rights anci relations to the State or Government.
