Increasingly, large companies, schools and hospitals are looking to contract out a whole range of services, such as building maintenance, cleaning, catering and IT services in order to concentrate on their core activities. As a result, a new type of management skill - facilities management (FM) - has developed which is frequently provided by construction firms, such as contractors or surveyors. Such firms have existing skills to offer since quite a large amount of facilities management is property-related. This book relates general management and business techniques to the management of facilities. It links theory to practice, through case studies, and has been written by a team of academics at Salford University working with practitioners. It aims to provide a reference guide for what is still a very new profession. It should be of interest to facilities managers, building and quanitity surveyors, large firms of architects, large contractors, and should be useful as a library reference for construction diploma and degree students.
