Karen Luker is Professor of Nursing, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, University of Manchester and editor of the journal Health and Social Care in the Community.

Jean Orr is Professor of Nursing, The Queen's University of Belfast and member of the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC). She is also Chair of the Nursng and Community Health Care Nursing Committee of the UKCC.

The first edition of Health Visiting was published in 1985 and quickly became established as the leading textbook in the field. Since then, the principles of health visiting practice have, in part, been assimilated into other branches of community health nursing.

The second edition has been comprehensively updated to meet the strong emphasis placed on community health in Project 2000 diploma courses and post-registration education. The scope of the book has therefore been broadened to include all nurses who require the specialist skills and knowledge to work in the community.

New chapters include an introduction to the implications for the profession of the National Health Service and Community Care Act (1990), and an evaluation of the role of information and information technology in community health nursing.
