THE SYMBOLIC FUNCTION is an original and provocative attempt to explain human symbol making and to develop an understanding of language and cognition usually held apart by the separate movements of philosophy and psychoanalysis. This book defines a new discipline and a new cooperation.

Gemma Corradi Fiumara received her first degree at Barnard College at Columbia University where she studied as a Fulbright scholar. She took her doctorate at the University of Rome. She is the author of Philosophy and Coexistence, and The Other Side of Language.
Drawing on an impressive knowledge of contemporary philosophy of language, psychoanalysis, hermeneutics and linguistics, Gemma Corradi Fiumara argues that the human use of symbols is not a purely cognitive function but an interactive one. Human communication is both something developed in the head and in the world. The symbolic function is thus a productive sphere of enquiry for the development of our understanding of human language and emotion.

paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Symbolic Function is Gemma Corradi Fiumaraâs influential exploration of how psychoanalysis and philosophy intersect through the medium of language. Drawing on Freud, Lacan, and contemporary hermeneutics, Fiumara examines how symbolic processes shape subjectivity, communication, and the formation of meaning. She argues that language is not merely a vehicle for expression but a dynamic field in which desire, conflict, and interpretation unfold, challenging rigid structuralist accounts of the psyche. A key text for readers interested in psychoanalytic theory, the philosophy of language, and the deeper mechanisms through which humans create and inhabit meaning. Photograph available on request.
