Rezensionen

reS-Gr 1-Wallace returns to the format used in Rabbit's Bedtime (Houghton, 2001) in presenting this charming counting book. Done with collage and brightly colored "found paper," the artwork features a group of bunnies that stop by various community shops to pick up supplies for a clean-up day and picnic in the park. Starting with 10 and ending with none, the number of characters diminishes as each one of them enters a store. Their outfits and accessories provide a clue as to who will make the next stop and temporarily disappear from the pages. The bunny holding the paintbrush stops by the paint store, while the one holding a book goes to the library. After picking up the day's supplies, all 10 arrive at the park ready to work-and then play. Wallace has combined bright complementary colors in an attractive layout that will entertain a young audience. By using recycled materials in the artwork itself, she has cleverly combined the medium with a message of caring for the local community and its resources. A terrific selection for storytimes, one-on-one sharing, and independent browsing.

Ages 4-7. Wallace presents her charming cast of bunny characters on the title page: 10 bunnies associated with particular characteristics and colors. The text consists of a countdown from 10 to 1, as each bunny goes into a market or florist or paint store; children will delight in figuring out who went where and who got what. Then all the bunnies gather in a neglected park and spruce it up nicely with new flowers, a banner, and painted benches. Wallace's simply shaped illustrations are done in brightly colored paper collage, and it is fun to see brooms, mailboxes, library books, trash bags, and other minutiae of daily life emerge in her inventive paper shapes. Primary-grade teachers will want this on hand for ecology units. GraceAnne DeCandido
