Reseña del editor:
This is not good, thought Christopher as he looked around him. Smoke lingered in the air from the mortars and gunfire being fired at the landing fleet. Suddenly, they were drenched by the cold water of the English Channel, as a German shell exploded next to their landing craft destined for Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. It was June 6,1944. Wags, Will and Jack had parachuted into Normandy earlier this morning. Had they survived what was sure to be a death-defying jump? He had been down this path before, and the only outcome that was certain was that people died: good, decent people. Their mission? To free Europe from Hitler's and Nazi Germany’s evil occupation. The future of the free world rests on their success. Failure is not an option! Set in Military History class at boot camp, Marine recruit Christopher B. Cosgrove III discovers a portal back in time in the blowing American flag. He arrives in England weeks before the D-Day invasion with his friends, Kevin, Brian, Wags, Will and Jack. As members of the 116th Infantry, Christopher, Kevin and Brian are preparing to land on Omaha Beach. Wags, Will and Jack, members of the 101st Airborne, are preparing to jump behind enemy lines as the invasion begins. Historically accurate, Christopher teaches his young readers the facts about the largest invasion in the history of the world by living through it with them. "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day" is a compelling and exciting way to learn our history, ensuring a new appreciation for the freedoms we hold dear. This middle reader historical fiction book is the perfect way to educate your children about our history. Carefully researched, "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day" teaches the reader why the United States fought in World War II. They will learn the significance of the D-Day invasion along with the heroics of the Allied soldiers and the mistakes that were made along the way. Instead of memorizing dates and places, children will become active participants in the greatest invasion ever launched in the history of the world. While written for middle readers, the book provides and excellent overview for adults as well. Whether merely curious or helping a child with a project, "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day" provides valuable information and references for further sources. Written by a Gold Star parent, "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day" allows Christopher to live on teaching children the history of this exceptional country. It highlights love of God and Country, and the sacrifices made by our military to keep us free. "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day" is perfect for home schooling, summer reading, a Christmas or birthday gift. Give your child, grandchild, niece or nephew the best gift of all, the gift of United States history so they can learn just how exceptional America truly is.
Biografía del autor:
Retired after 25 years as an assistant prosecutor in Essex County, New Jersey, Eileen Cosgrove is publishing "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day" as a tribute to her step-son, LCpl. Christopher B. Cosgrove III. Christopher was killed by a suicide bomber in Al Anbar Province, Iraq on October 1, 2006. Inspired by Christopher's love of history, Eileen makes history come alive through the characters in "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day." Christopher lives on, fighting alongside his real life brothers Kevin and Brian. He teaches them and the reader history along the way. Never much of a history buff, Eileen began reading history so she could engage in intelligent conversations with Christopher. Once she began reading oral histories, she was hooked! She realized that the reason children do not like history is because of the way it is taught. In "The Fighting Hawks at D-Day," she finds a way to make history interesting and fun. Eileen is married to her husband Chris for 20 years and the mother of Kevin, 19, and Brian, 15.
