Designing a book often requires knowing what the printing capabilities are of the printer. CS Digital Sampler is a compendium of print tests that cover most design and prepress issues faced by anyone using CreateSpace as a printer.

Unlike other graphic arts books intended to assist the designer, the actual PDF upload is downloadable so that the user can compare the original digital files to:
• What CreateSpace prints
• The user’s monitor
• The user’s printer

This is a non-technical book. CreateSpace members rarely have the graphic arts experience to make good use of technical guides, and much of the technical information available from other printers is not available to CreateSpace members. The goal is to demonstrate the CreateSpace’s various capabilities. Tests include:
• Type sizes from 2 pt to 12 pt, normal and reversed out
• Lines from 0.15pt to .075pt normal and reversed out
• 8 bit and 1 bit monochrome line art from 300 dpi to 2400dpi
• Registration black, K-only black and 6 common rich blacks
• Printing test pages from sRGB and PDF/X (CMYK) art
• Form tests
• Tests for banding and banding streaks
• Neutral grays in K-only and CMYK values
• Pantone Pastels with TIC under 25%
• Highlight and shadow details
• High ink coverage samples 290% on a 400% background
• sRGB versus color corrected CMYK art

CS Digital Sampler shows the key results from a 168 page book of tests, designed and printed over a two year period. While some of the conclusions may be controversial, the actual test prints with the original art clearly and objectively define the digital printing capabilities of CreateSpace.
