Johnny A. McDowell is a native Texan that spent his first eleven years in El Paso speaking fluent Spanish and living in the beautiful Hispanic culture there. After moving from their El Paso home, he experienced a cultural change and negative labels being applied to his family because of their thick Hispanic accents. He wanted to stop being different and be just like all the other kids. He didn't understand his own self-worth at such a tender age. But, through the support of his mother and teachers who reminded him of how fortunate he was to speak two languages, he began to rediscover his self-worth. Soon he realized that being African American with a Spanish accent was his identity and was special and beautiful. Understanding self-worth at a tender age is an important tool in our children's lives. Not being tall enough, having freckles, the wrong color hair, a birth defect, blindness, deafness, or stuttering may cause our children to question their worth. This book is Mr. McDowell's letter of support and affirmation to our children and a prayer that they can love themselves and the things that make up their special and beautiful identity.
