She graduated from Hastings College in Nebraska in 1958 and from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1961. She was ordained to the position of Hunger Action Enabler for the Presbytery of Chicago and later served as an organizer for Bread for the World. She is the wife of a retired Presbyterian pastor, the mother of two children and grandmother of one. Her spiritual journey has combined both personal spirituality and social activism.
