Rezensionen

Grade 4-7-- This biography opens with a young George Bush bailing out of his aircraft after being shot down during the second World War. Buchman then chronicles Bush's life both before and after that point, making this a personal biography, with an emphasis on Bush's character and the influence of family and friends on shaping it. She spends most of the book describing his life before he entered politics, showing readers how a strong tradition of public service in the Bush family propelled him toward public life. Unfortunately, her coverage of Bush's political career is just an accounting of the jobs he has held, and reads almost like a resume, offering no real analysis of how well he did. She spends very little time on his vice-presidency, and devotes only three pages to his successful campaign for the presidency. Buchman is admiring of Bush but does mention some of his weaknesses and problems, such as the Iran-Contra affair. There are no illustrations in this book, a deficiency which hurts it considerably. Some small factual errors providing contradictory information on the same page make for jarring reading. Much of the information is readily available elsewhere, but the book is timely. There will undoubtedly be more and better books about Bush forthcoming, but this can serve until those others become available. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, Mo.
