PreSchool-K Nathan the elephant and Nicholas Alexander the mouse are preparing for Nathan's first fishing trip. After many unsuccessful attempts to hook a fish, Nathan uses his trunk to good advantage and pulls in a trout. The friends make preparations for supper but find the fish too pretty to eat. After returning it to the lake, the two content themselves with their soggy, capsized peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches. This tender-hearted story, in which even the worms escape, is expressed in simple text and delicate watercolors. An easy-to-follow sequence runs from left to right across a double-page spread. Children will delight in the details of fishing gear, fleeing worms, and a mother bird's search for breakfast. Illustrations of sandwich preparation and worm gathering advance the story before one is well into the text. A final wordless picture shows the happy pair at their picnic.
