Grade 3-5 While poking around the old Peacock Place in search of his runaway dog, Hobie discovers that the famous Peacock horses are missing. Then a strange, ghostly woman signals to him from the house. Hobie suspects that the woman is Miss Peacock herself, and that she is in some kind of danger. Unfortunately, the town sheriff doesn't believe Hobie's story, and Hobie's best friend, Ben, is too busy taking care of his horse to get involved. It is up to Hobie to try and rescue Miss Peacock. When he, too, becomes a prisoner of the cruel Calvin Prentice, who has stolen the Peacock horses, Hobie must use his wits to escape, and then to rescue Miss Peacock and her brother. Although not as suspenseful as a book built on a similar premise, Robert's A View from the Cherry Tree, (Atheneum, 1975), Hobie's chatty narration and the story's satisfying resolution will keep readers interested in this well-paced mystery.
