Barbara Hambly was born in San Diego. Her interest in fantasy began with reading The Wizard of Oz at an early age and has continued ever since. She attended the University of California, Riverside, specialising in medieval history and then spent a year at the University at Bordeaux in Southern France as a teaching and research assistant. She now lives in Los Angeles.

When Jaldis the Blind performed the ancient spell to open a Dark Well he heard voices from another world pleading for help, for wizards in that world are being persecuted. Jaldis and his apprentice, Rhion, entered the Well to cross the Void to the wizards’ aid: but only Rhion survived the perilous journey.

On regaining consciousness, Rhion finds himself surrounded by men in severe grey uniforms, emblazoned with swastikas: he has fallen into the hands of Nazi occultists determined to use real magic to decimate their enemies.
