Understanding Maps, revised and expanded for this second edition, continues to address the fundamental principles of visual perception and map symbolism.

The text critically examines the assumptions which lie behind the theories of psychophysical testing and cartographic communication. It extends this critique to much neglected topics such as cartographic skill and the connections between cartography and art. This includes the use of classical rhetoric as a model for applied art; the differences between maps and written texts; the real relationships between cartography and art, and the nature of cartographic style. The final section deals with cartographic skill, particularly with incorporating skill into artificially intelligent and expert systems of digital mapping.

Key features:

- Outlines the processes of visual perception in relation to maps
- Discusses the cartographic problems of representing three dimensions in two
- Examines mapping as a form of communication, providing an original contribution to understanding map design and use
- Analyses maps as artistic works, dealing with aesthetic properties, composition, generalisation and style
- Challenges many established assumptions and conventional views, introducing many new concepts
- Relates theoretical concepts to specific map examples

Understanding Maps is written for postgraduate students of cartography and for undergraduates taking cartography within topographic science, geography, GIS and the mapping science field. It also provides interesting and thought-provoking reading to anyone with a serious interest in maps and map making.
