In 1985 the English-Speaking Union set up the "Framework" project to devise a comprehensive frame of description to compare the various examinations of the main English Language Boards. The result is the "ESU Framework" which covers 15 of the principal Examination Boards in English as an International Language, giving users help in choosing the most suitable tests for them and advising on how to interpret the results. Each examination is described in a standard way, drawing on a series of performance scales. A nine-point scale allows users to relate the level of each examination and, at the same time, compare the content and coverage of all the examinations described. A final chapter discusses other implications of the Framework to course design and materials description, while appendices provide further information and practical help. The "ESU Framework" should provide a major contribution to integrating the wide variety of ELT examinations available. It is designed for ELT professionals in all types of institution, and for those in companies and universities who need to assess and/or recruit holders of certificates.
