Rather than emphasizing the uniqueness of each of the 18 states of Western Europe, it attempts to draw out common characteristics and shared problems while always recognizing spatial variations in their expression. The essays have been written in a selective, generalized way and at an introductory level, with a British undergraduate audience in mind.
