When designing a new critical care tower on their main campus, Akron Children’s Hospital used Integrated Lean Project and Facility Design. This design method engaged front line staff, medical staff, architectural firms, construction firms, and trade craftsmen in Lean concepts while creating an architecturally beautiful building. The tower was functionally designed by the same people who now work in the new facility. Akron Children’s Hospital staff, the designers, and the builders were charged with creating a space that supported Lean care processes and utilizing Lean building principles, while maintaining the organization’s desire for beauty and fun for children in the community who require care. They created full-scale mockups of floors to allow front line medical staff to simulate work in the space, which allowed the staff to provide change suggestions prior to building. The Integrated Lean Project and Facility Design resulted in a cost reduction of $60 million dollars in construction costs by implementing target value design, and square foot requirements were also reduced by nearly 50,000 square feet using Lean Design methods. We invite you to use this book to travel through the process of contracting, mock up activities, and move planning, and we will share the valuable lessons that we learned along the way.
