'The Poet Laureate gives to her younger readers the same passionate commitment and ingenuity of her predecessor, Ted Hughes. There's nothing remotely secondhand about her children's verse, as this superb anthology reveals.' (The Independent 2010-11-02)
Although not a Christmas collection, it would make a wonderful present for a young teenager with an ear for poetry's rhythms and rhyme. Many of these poems have an engaging and often humorous fantasy element; Cucumbers creates in miniature a society where the new form of currency is the eponymous vegetable. It's fun, but it also implicitly invites its young reader to interrogate society's construction of value and wealth. And the poem Irish Rats Rhymed to Death should be compulsory reading for some of our political and financial "masters". (Irish Times)
A stunning collection of poems for children by the Poet Laureate. Carol Ann Duffy's collection opens with 'The Words of Poems', which is a perfect introduction to the feast of delights found within this anthology. Duffy's poems encompass everything from 'The Good Child's Guide to Rock'n' Roll', which is at least as much fun for adults as children, and the more obviously child directed, 'The Sock'. This really is an anthology to treasure. (Julia Eccleshare lovereading.co.uk)
In turn funny, poignant, playful, sombre and hilarious, this book offers a wide array of experiences along a huge cast of characters to discover, and creatures to delight in. Dipping in is a joy (Scholastic: Read Me)
'In the world of British poetry, Carol Ann Duffy is a superstar.' (Guardian) This stellar edition of her poems brings together work from her four award-winning collections for children, and sprinkles in a generous helping of new poems to match. From her dazzlingly debut Meeting Midnight through to her newest, brightest poems, Carol Ann Duffy's writing for younger readers has always bubbled with wit and humour, intelligence and affection, and introduced us to many strange and wonderful characters along the way. Among the enchanting voices to be heard are those of the Loch Ness Monster's husband, the oldest girl in the world and a herd of cows on a shopping trip to Manchester.
