"These articles were first printed in the 'Daily Telegraph' on the dates given, and are reprinted with the permission of that paper. What I originally wrote was sometimes cut: I have not restored these cuts. Indeed, I have made a few others, scrapping paragrpahs that were significant, if at all, only at the time they were printed. Almost nothing, however, has been altered, except the titles. These were usually supplied by the paper, and I have therefore in most cases invented new ones".
