Buchbeschreibung (Hardcover, 1971). (1970) 1971 reprint. Pp296. B/w photograph plates, b/w illustrations by David Gentleman, bibliography. Maroon cloth, spine titled in gilt. Spotting and browning to edges, internally clean. Good-plus in price-clipped dust-wrapper. George Ewart Evans was a Welsh schoolmaster who lived in the village of Blaxhall in Suffolk. He developed a fascination for the village, recording much of its history and way of life in the words of the inhabitants themselves. He later expanded his field of activity, eventually covering a wider are of East Anglia, as well as his home district in Wales. Evans wrote this particular book to demonstrate that however much academic investigators and their readers think they know, there is still no substitute for going and asking the people who were or are actually there. Perhaps the most striking example of this was the twenty years of plague outbreaks in Ipswich - with 75-80 percent mortality - which were not contained until 1918. . Artikel-Nr. 60149
