Elizabeth Wakefield is worried about her boyfriend, Tom Watts. His twenty-first birthday is just a few days away, and he's depressed that he doesn't have a family to help him celebrate. Elizabeth's sure the surprise party she's planning will cheer him up--but will her gift be more than he can handle?
Celine Boudreaux is back at SVU and determined to make a splash with the most exclusive sorority on campus. Celine will do anything to get into Thetas--even if it's illegal . . .
Jessica refused to get discouraged. Guys who blew hot and cold usually turned her off, but Nick was so adorable, he was worth figuring out. The sky was like black velvet draped with diamond-bright stars. It felt good to sit down, even if the Camaro's seats were narrow and low to the ground. Nick rolled down the windows and let the gentle cool air blow in. Jessica glanced at Nick's handsome profile and wished she could read him better. His abrupt mood shifts baffled her. But I can handle him, she decided. It had been Jessica's idea to leave the carnival. She'd hoped Nick would want to go somewhere private . . . like his place. For a second she wondered if she was being too reckless. But one glimpse of Nick's adorable face from under her lashes convinced her--Jessica definitely wanted to be alone with this guy. Nick started the car and flashed Jessica a quick smile. "You said something earlier about going somewhere quiet, Jess--isn't there a late-night coffee bar around here? Sinbad's or Simba's or something like that?" He drove expertly down the two-lane road, passing several cars and dodging oncoming traffic with ease. Jessica watched him with admiration. He was smooth and in control, and she liked that. "You're thinking of Sasha's," Jessica offered conversationally. "But let's drive for a while and then decide what we want to do." She would think of a way to convince him they should find a more intimate setting than a coffee shop. "Good idea. It's been a long night." Jessica hoped that didn't mean he was ready to take her home. The night was still young, and she was eager to enjoy it. Jessica stretched her legs and got comfortable. "Do you mind if I put on the radio?" Jessica asked him. He shook his head. They had left all the traffic behind, and the road was suddenly deserted. SVU was at least ten miles away. Jessica thought the empty, rural landscape they passed was kind of eerie in the dark. Nothing but stark fields sped by. Jessica didn't see one single house or building. She fiddled with the radio dial and tried to find a decent station. Opera--yuck. Country--double yuck. And some loudmouthed talk-show host. She frowned as she caught garbled bits of rock and alternative music and a scrap of jazz. Nothing. Darn. What we need is something romantic or sexy as background music. She eyed Nick's glove compartment. I bet he's got some cool CDs stashed in there. Nick was the kind of guy who'd have the latest stuff. She darted a quick look at him. Nick's chiseled face was mysterious, almost aloof in the moonlight pouring through the window. Jessica shrugged. She was sure he wouldn't mind her looking around for his CDs. She struggled as she pulled on the knob, feeling foolish that she couldn't figure out how to open a glove compartment. Turning the knob left and right didn't work either--maybe she should push in the knob. It clicked. Nick turned sharply. "Jessica, what are you doing?" The glove compartment sprang open, and Jessica's heart hurtled to her throat. Her stomach turned into a ball of ice. Nestled against the stark white of the interior was a black, shining object, its snub nose pointing toward Jessica. Her throat closed and she couldn't speak. Swiftly Jessica slammed the glove compartment door shut. But it was too late. She had already seen the gun.
