"What do you mean, you can't find the catalog?" Lila screeched at Jessica in the school hallway on Wednesday morning. Lila slammed her locker shut with a bang. "If anyone gets their hands on that, we'll be socially ruined! Jessica Wakefield, you're the most irresponsible, scatterbrained--"
"Lila! You're making a scene!" Jessica hissed.
"So?" Lila demanded. "I'll make a scene if I want to make a scene!"
"It's not the good kind of scene," Jessica replied. "You don't want anyone asking what's wrong, do you? What will you say then?"
Lila crossed her arms over her chest. "I'll just explain that my so-called best friend is mentally deficient for losing the catalog we'd--" Lila paused. "Oh," she finished in a normal tone of voice. "I see your point. Don't want to go there."
"Right," Jessica told her. "And anyway, Li, as I was about to say before you freaked out, the only person who could possibly have my notebook is Liz. And while she might be horrified if she reads it, she's certainly not going to show it to anyone."
"How can you be so sure?"
"It's just not like her," Jessica argued. "She's the good twin, remember? She'll never snitch on me except in matters of life and death. Believe me, it's something I've counted on my whole life. Sure, I might have to listen to a lecture from her, but I'm positive the list is safe."
Lila sniffed, but Jessica could tell she was partially mollified. "It's the first time I'm glad your sister's such a stick-in-the-mud," Lila said. "When do you think she'll return it--"
Lila's words were interrupted by the crackle of the school's PA system. A young male voice called for attention over the loudspeaker.
"Is that Winston?" Jessica asked as everybody in the hall stopped to listen. It wasn't the normal time of day for announcements--those were usually given in the first ten minutes of homeroom. And why was Winston giving the announcements?
"Shhh," Lila ordered. "It might be about the prom."
"I'd like to take this opportunity to read something very special to you," Winston's voice boomed through the halls. "I did not write this, but I think you'll enjoy it." He cleared his throat, and the loudspeaker momentarily hissed with static. "'Bruce Patman,'" Winston intoned. "'Tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. Hot tennis player's body. Best feature: rich. Worst feature: kisses like a live jellyfish. Key word: arrogant . . . "'
Jessica's mouth dropped open, and when she glanced at Lila, she saw that her best friend's face had gone white. "Somebody will stop him," she gasped at Lila. "Right?"
But to Jessica's horror, Winston continued to read. The halls were filled with catcalls and laughter as Jessica and Lila stood frozen side by side, gaping at the loudspeaker over their heads. With every passing moment Jessica hoped that Sweet Valley would be hit by a giant earthquake. She'd prefer to be swallowed up in a huge crevasse rather than stand in the hallway and listen to her private opinions broadcast all over the school. But the names and descriptions kept coming until Jessica was blushing from head to toe.
Winston paused about a third of the way through the list. "I don't have time to read all of these," his thin, reedy voice called through the loudspeaker. "But I've taken the liberty of typing up this list. I'm sure everyone will want one of the photocopies I've made--free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis."
"We're doomed," Lila moaned.
"That rat!" Jessica hissed. But then she realized something. Winston said he'd typed up the list! "Hang on," she told Lila, trying to put a brave face on the disaster. "Nobody knows we wrote these. Everyone will think it's a joke--Winston's reading it, after all."
Then the PA system crackled to life again. "In case you're wondering--and I'm sure you are--the authors of this wonderful document are Jessica Wakefield and Lila Fowler," Winston announced cheerfully. "I have the original in their handwriting on file if anyone feels the need to see proof."
"We're doomed," Jessica agreed.
"No, wait!" Winston protested over the loudspeaker. "I was just trying to--" There was a sound of muffled argument, followed by a loud squawk as Winston was forcibly pulled off the air.
"At least he got into trouble," Lila observed grimly.
Jessica nervously peered down the hallway. All the other students were staring at her and Lila with shocked expressions. Jessica closed her eyes as she heard nasty laughter float down the hall. This is bad, she realized as the first blast of shock wore off. This, is very, very bad.
"Not as much trouble as we're in, Li," she told her friend as they backed up against their lockers. "I don't think we've ever been in trouble like this before."
"Jess, I'm scared," Lila whimpered.
"So am I," Jessica replied.
But below Jessica's fear of what the guys were going to do to her, another, darker emotion was simmering up.
Fury.
Jessica clenched her hands into fists. There was only one way Winston could have gotten his hands on that list.
How could Elizabeth do this to me? Jessica thought, fuming with anger.
Her twin was going to pay.
