Von der hinteren Coverseite

Maggie May, born into the slums of Liverpool at the end of Queen Victoria's reign, had more difficulties to cope with in her young life than most: a drunken father, who hated her for not being a boy; threats and dangers from her father's criminal associates; the early death of her gentle mother; and the grinding poverty of their lives. But most of all, she had to endure the shame and insults heaped upon her by her name, given to her in a moment of spite by her vindictive father - the name of the city's most notorious prostitute, immortalised in song and legend.

Forced to become both parent and breadwinner to her younger brother, and desperately trying to live down the legacy of her name, Maggie managed to escape from Liverpool and, for a while, enjoy a new, idyllic life in the countryside. But fate forced her back again and into the arms of a stranger who was to bring her both heartbreak and the greatest happiness she would ever know.
