The following short treatise originated in a dissatisfaction felt by the writer with the ordinary treatment of the points involved. The time has arrived when, in the judgment of many, a radical handling of the whole subject of materialism must, and, it may possibly be added, can be undertaken. The progress of knowledge in all directions makes it possible to examine Nature at the foundations, and to detect where Mind has interposed, step by step, in its arrangements. The author aims at presenting a bird s-eye view of the subject, rather than at saying everything that might be said. As far as possible, the scaffolding has been kept out of view, and the subject-matter contracted to the utmost limit on this account, and for the further reason that extended works on such a subject are in a great measure useless, because never read. An aroument in several branches in order to tell must be kept in unity of view. An epitomised presentation, therefore, alone affords the conjoint aspect on which a full impression depends.
