Continuum mechanics is concerned with the global behaviour of gases, liquids, or solids. The concept is particularly useful in engineering in that it represents a way of visualising a physical model that approximates everyday observations, instead of analysing the actual complex motion of discrete molecules. This book offers a concise, applications-oriented introduction to continuum mechanics. It begins with a review of vectors and tensors and their applications to the domain and boundary integrals. The remaining chapters cover kinematics, equilibrium and kinetics, elastic solids and Newtonian fluids. Every chapter includes numerous worked examples and problems. In providing a reasonable balance between mathematical rigour and practical applications, between solids and fluids, and between linear and nonlinear theories, this timely book will be useful to engineering students, as well as practising engineers and applied scientists.
