Beginning with the acceptance of Christianity in the tenth century, the contributors—Slavic specialists, theologians, historians, and literary scholars—examine the majestic sweep of a thousand years of the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

This three-volume collection treats an immense subject from many angles, providing a storehouse of perspectives and information. The present volume focuses on the literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Volume I (published in 1993) examines the history and influences of Christianization from the tenth to the seventeenth century, and Volume II (published in 1994) explores cultural history from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries.
