Reaching beyond the methods of modern structuralism (which find intricate logic in the apparently absurd), he proposes a historical perspective to illuminate basic communicative patterns developed in the primordial stage of mankind and handed down from paleolithic to Oriental and Classical civilizations, where they underlie both religious practice and literary elaborations of it.
