Charles Einstein is an expert on gambling; writes terrific novels; and between 1966 and 1968, produced 3 wonderful volumes of baseball fact and fiction. There were 3 volumes of the Fireside books, and here is a compendium of the best of those 3 volumes, with some new contributions. Here is: Al Stump, with a great piece on Ty Cobb; Grantland Rice, on the death of Babe Ruth; Bob Feller, on throwing the slider; Richard Donovan, on Satchel Paige and how to stay young; James P. Dawson, on Lou Gehrig's last ball game; and many other great pieces. If you've never read this book, this is one of the best of its kind ever assembled; really well done.
