Smith, a collector of American folk art, came across a powerful painting at a flea market, bought it, and spent the next two years trying to find out more about the artist's life and work. He documents the results of his efforts, telling about the life of unknown folk artist, Ellis Ruley, who died in 1959, in Norwich, Connecticut. Color plates present 64 paintings, and the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City contributes an introduction and an art study essay. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
