I began by making very simple things such as boats, then small boxes and tables; but as the years went by, I became more ambitious. When I married and had a home of my own I made furniture out of scraps of wood, and learnt how to French polish. I started to repair our better pieces of furniture, most of which were antiques which had either been given to us or we had occasionally bought cheaply because they were in poor condition.
