Zustand: Sehr gut. 714 p., w/ images and tables. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Soiled dust jacket and yellowed page margins. Otherwise in good condition. - Content: The Dictionary of Classsical Mythology, Religion, Literature, and Art is based on a German work by Dr. Oskar Seyffert, a distinguished Latin scholar, and was published in Leipzig in 1882. Fbr the English edition, published nine years later under the title The Dictionary of Classical Antiquities, Dr. Seyffert supplemented the text. The entries were translated, carefully revised, and, in many cases, rewritten and rearranged by the English editors, Henry Nettleship, a professor of Latin literature at Oxford, and J. E. Sandys, who held the position of public orator at Cambridge. The two editors supplied numerous notes and additional material in their respective areas of expertise. Dr. Sandys contributed new articles on mosaics, pigments for painting, vases, the Edict of Diocletian, and the artists Mentor, Mys, Pauson, and Polyclitus. In the second edition, the editors again revised the book and added an index. The third edition was further revised by Dr. Sandys. As Nettleship and Sandys noted in their original preface, within the compass of a single volume, in addition to all the expected entries in a general dictionary of Greek and Roman antiquities, the book includes information on mythology and literature. There are also separate articles on Greek and Roman divinities, and on the lives and works of the philosophers, historians, orators, poets, and artists of Greece and Rome, as well as general and comprehensive views of such subjects as Greek and Roman religion, philosophy, history, rhetoric, literature, architecture, painting, sculpture, music, and the drama. The Dictionary also handles with impressive thoroughness such important topics as agriculture, commerce, marriage, judicial procedure, music, temples, theaters, the Trojan War, and the Olympian games. For the convenience of students, as well as of general readers, Greek and Latin terminology has been kept to a minimum and italicized when it is used. The Latin spelling of Greek words has been generally adopted, but the Greek form has, in most cases, been added in brackets.
