Buchbeschreibung Hardcover with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. 861 p., Good condition. Paper very slightly faded at the edges. -- Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was bom in 1854, the son of Sir W.R.W. Wilde, a distinguished surgeon, antiquarian and President of the Irish Academy. He studied at Magdalen College, Oxford and in 1878 won the Newdigate prize for his poem Ravenna. -- In 1881 Wilde published Poems and ten years later his best known novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. The first of his plays, Lady Windermere's Fan and (in French) Salome were published in 1893. These were followed in 1894 by A Woman of No Importance and in 1895 An Ideal Husband. -- Soon after the production of his most famous play, The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde was accused of homosexuality, a criminal offense in nineteenth century England. He sued for libel, but was sentenced to two years in prison. He then declared bankruptcy. While in prison, Salome was produced in Paris by Sarah Bernhardt. Wilde died an exile in Paris in 1900 having adopted the name Sebastian Melmoth. -- The present volume contains not only the complete plays, but also Wilde's stories, poems and children's stories. The line illustrations by artists such as Aubrey Beardsley and Donia Nachsen are taken from various classic editions of his work.
