About the book >.>.> Functions of Painting is a key work by the artist Fernand Léger, featured in the series The Documents of 20th-Century Art, edited by Bernard Karpel. This collection encompasses significant writings by Léger, offering insights into his artistic philosophy and the social functions of art. Many of these texts have not been previously published in English, thus enriching the discourse around 20th-century art. The book includes commentaries, a bibliography, and a chronology, accompanied by rare photographs that further illuminate Léger's contributions.Léger is described as perhaps the most public artist of his time, characterised by his desire to communicate the value of art to the broader public. He believed in the social responsibility of artists and sought to convey messages through painting, teaching, film, and written word. His work evolved from the confines of Cubism, embracing bold colours and iconic stylised figures, reflecting his reverence for both the beauty of workers and the machines integral to their lives. Despite yearning for connection with the working-class audience and encountering challenges in achieving that, Léger?s writings reveal a commitment to addressing the social limitations of art.The preface conveys Léger's perspective on the modern age, heralding a shift towards enlightenment and away from obscurity. His reflections challenge the limitations of perception and invite consideration of the evolving role of art in society. Functions of Painting serves as an essential resource for understanding Léger?s ideology and the broader context of 20th-century artistic movements, making it a noteworthy addition to the literature on modern art.
