Sir John Pope, Hennessy here takes a fresh look at the facts of Piero's career and the significance of his paint' ings. For the first time, a clear chronology establishes the probable sequence of his activities in Arezzo, Borgo San Sepolcro, Monterchi and Urbino. In assessing the paintings as works of art, we need to clear our minds of both our personal concerns and the ingenuities of art' historians and to concentrate on the works themselves: their structure (essential for an understanding of the complicated Arezzo fres' coes), their theoretical basis (largely derived from Alberti), their use of mathematical research (one of Piero's preoccupations) and the visual sensibi' lity that was peculiar to Piero's own psychology. Only then shall we see these paintings for what they really are. Sir John Pope'Hennessy has spent a lifetime holding leading positions in the world of the arts, and is the author of numerous definitive books on Renaissance painting and sculpture. He has been director of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London, Slade Professor of Fine Art at both Oxford and Cambridge and Consultative Chairman of the Department of European Painting at the Metro' politan Museum, New York. Since 1977 he has been Professor of Fine Arts at New York University, but lives mostly in Florence, devot' ing himself to writing and research.
