'The author's stated reason for writing this work on Roman Britain is the large number of recent discoveries, but its appeal lies rather in the provision of a brief and engagingly written history for general readers and students pursuing the subject in a general way. One's main criticism is of the compressed nature of the text. (.) The chapter on language, art, and religion is the best. There is an excellent consideration of the interaction of the Latin and Celtic languages. The interplay of Roman and Celtic elements in art is also discussed. (.) The detailed section on religion is the most useful in the book. (.) The coverage is generally good and one wishes that all the book had been treated to this depth. (.) There is a useful table of events. (.) The work forms a readable account of Roman Britain, but rather more text, drawings, and proof-checking would have made a better book.'
