Inhaltsangabe

The Scots, said a censorious English member of Parliament in 1607, have not suffered above two kings to die in their beds these two hundredyears. He may have exaggerated, but undeniably Scotland has a roughand bloodstained history.Continuously in print for more than forty years and renowned to thisday for the authority and wit with which it disentangles the complex threadsof Scotland s rich history, Fitzroy Maclean s classic work has been broughtup to date with recent events in the path to Scottish independence. Picturesfrom authentic contemporary sources illuminate the story its romanticfigures, battles, politics, and religion and provide a rich visual recordof Scotland s art, craftsmanship, and intellectual life.

Von der hinteren Coverseite

Here is the new revised edition of Maclean's classic work with a new added chapter by Magnus Linklater, who also revised the last edition, that brings the story of Scotland right up to date. Linklater examines how the new Scottish Parliament has fared and discusses significant events such as the controversies over the Holyrood parliament building, devolution and the transfer of taxation rights from Westminster, and the release of the Lockerbie bomber, as well as the fallout from the 2008 global financial crash and the debate about independence and the future of the United Kingdom now that the Scottish National Party is in power.
