A tribute to a major photographic genre's success in capturing in permanent form the most ephemeral of the arts. Over 200 reproduced duotone plates reveal dance in all its aspects - from many countries and periods, from classical ballet to rock and roll - photographed wherever dancers waltz, tango, tap-dance, pirouette, stomp, jive or kick up their heels for joy. The great dancers are here - Nijinsky, Fred Astaire, Pavlova, Fonteyn and Isadora Duncan among other immortals; but so too are the anonymous, captured in a Parisian nightclub or at the Roxy, New York, an Amsterdam street cafe or simply dancing alone by the seashore. The wide range of photographers include Gordon Anthony, Barbara Morgan, Beaton, Degas, Genthe, Steichen, Horst, Man Ray and Helmut Newton. Introductions to each chapter and detailed notes on the photographs provide essential background about the dancers and photographers.

Zustand: Gut. 240 S. Einband leicht berieben. - I believe dance photography to be more than opera glasses, more than a supply of icons, more than a diminished reflection of the dance. At its best it takes on an artistic life of its own; its four sides frame a tiny theatre, it is an independent medium subject to its own laws. Photography may serve the dance without being subservient. Thinking about this independence, I realized that dance photography, no less than dance, can be regarded as a language, with a vocabulary, grammar and syntax. What is more, a true appreciation is only possible within these terms. The iconic and documentary are among these terms, or functions, but by no means exhaust the expressive potential of the language. Photographers have never been bound by the stage, or even by the studio. They peer backstage into dressing and rehearsal rooms, roam the streets for spontaneous gestures and search out the latest crazes in ballrooms and discotheques. They travel across cultures to record the Eskimo Dance of Triumph and the dances brought from many countries to Ellis Island. And looking at these images, the viewer travels in time back and forth over 150 years. Whatever photography is in relation to the dance, it is not itself a fugitive art.
