Zustand: Sehr gut. 112 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - During the late 1950s Jasper Johns helped set forth an alternative to Abstract Expressionism in the United States. His appropriation of immediately recognizable imagery-American flags, targets, and numbers-resulted in a more public, apparently less introspective approach than was then prevalent, and his work was distinct for being premeditated, ironic, and detached. During the 1960s Johns turned to more private and hermetic imagery, yet his art still held a central position in terms of its effect. The impact of his work has been extraordinary in the postwar period, for his investigations of style, subject matter, meaning, emotion, systematic organization, and serial imagery strongly influenced the most important artistic developments of the 1960s and early 1970s in the United States. Since the mid 1970s Johns's overall focus has changed, and he has turned with increasing absorption to the history of art. As if to reinforce his altered ambition, Johns responded in 1973 to a question about whether contemporary art is a critique of the past by asserting that "old art offers just as good a criticism of new art as new art offers of old."1 ISBN 9780500276006 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Mit zahlr. auch farb.
