Buchbeschreibung Originalbroschur. Zustand: Gut. 208 S. Einband leicht berieben. - For more than sixty years, from about 1911 until his death in I 977, Man Ray stood at the centre of European and American modernism, as a painter, conjurer of magical and poetic objects, inventor and photographer. Few twentieth-century artists have played such a vital role in the creation of imaginative visual realities. Born in America, he lived most of his adult life in France, and was a central figure in the Surrealist and Dadaist movements - a close friend and collaborator of Duchamp, Picabia, Ernst, Breton and Eluard. Working in a variety of techniques, Man Ray created images that were disturbing at the time and that still disturb us today: subtle but direct, witty but at the same time probing the hidden recesses of psychology and emotion. His influence has grown more pervasive over the years. Sir Roland Penrose was a close friend of Man Ray for some fifty years. He organized the International Surrealist Exhibition in London, in I 936, where Man Ray's work was shown for the first time in England. A Surrealist painter himself Penrose creates in this classic book an absorbing narrative about the life of his friend, providing unique insights into Man Ray's work and his role at the very centre of one of the crucial periods in twentieth-century art.
