Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Text in English. 208 pp. With 270 photographs, 252 plans and sketches. Minor rubbing on the dust jacket. One of the most individual and poetic masters of the architecture of out time, Alvar Aalto is regarded as an essentially national architect in whose work the elements of form and function have always been closely associated. Since 1930 he has become widely known outside his native Finland for his imaginative use of his country's traditional building material, timber. His principal pre-war designs were for the Turun-Sanomat newspaper building at Turku, the Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Paimio, and the libraty at Viipuri Particularly influential too were the Finnish pavilions at the Paris Exposition (1937) and the New York World's Fair (1938-9), the latter leading to a professorship for Aalto at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the period after the Second World War he became involved in major urban designs and redevelopment schemes, including one for the centre of Helsinki. Notable among the many public buildings he designed are the Opera House in Essen, the cultural and religious centres at Wolfsburg in Germany, the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki and the town hall at Säynätsalo, together with educational buildings and related residential accommodation for students and libraries. This book, incorporating material from the definitive two-volume study authorized by Aalto himself, surveys over seventy projects grouped chronologically to follow the evolution of the architect's work. Extensively illustrated with photographs, plans, models and layout sketches, the projects have notes compiled by Karl Fleig in collaboration with the architect. They draw attention not only to the practical aspects of the work - the theatre with interchangeable wall surfaces to meet varying acoustic requirements, the exhibition pavilion designed to allow all four storeys to be viewed simultaneously but also to the architect's concern with balance and rhythm of line.
