The college graduate of colonial times, pre paring for clerical functions, passed his appren ticeship in the study and under the tuition of some scholarly parish minister. When a clergy man, apt to teach, assembled two, three, or more candidates under his roof, formed them into a class, and taught them after a certain scheme, a beginning was made which developed into the theological seminary. The economy of the new plan, upon which two or three experts could in struct a number of candidates, over the old one which required as many masters as pupils, was too obvious to escape the notice of a class of thrifty, practical men, accustomed to organize and constitute.
