In this view of the matter I am fully borne out by the existing regulations of the British service at the present moment. By an edict of his late Majesty, the appointments of physicians to the forces were annulled, while the surgeons and assistant-surgeons retain their place and it is not a little curious to observe, that after repeated changes in the designa tion, rank, titles, and implied acquirements of the medical Officers Of the army, we should now appear to be acting in conformity to the sentiments which prevailed upon this sub ject more than two hundred years ago.
