Several of these poems have in past years found their way singly into many households, and have ministered solace, through the blessing of God, to the sick and the weary. That named The Border Land has been often printed separately, and has had, under the form of a fly sheet, a very wide circulation in the chambers of suffering and death. This, with other pieces of like character (composing the olive leaves), is now reprinted, with the hope that the whole may prove acceptable. Not one of them was originally written for publication. Not a leaf in the garland can lay claim to very high poetical merit. The author can only hope that if any part of it is fitted to give pleasure or comfort to those who choose to gather it, stern critics in rhythm' and metre may forbear to rend it asunder.
