Two of the plays contained in this little volume were originally written by me for the use of some English students with whom I was reading French, my own native tongue. Together with many other teachers, I believe that the study of dramatic form is an efficient means of making progress in a living language, but until recently pupils studying French were usually made to learn exclusive parts from the classical drama of France. Generation after generation of schoolboys and schoolgirls has rendered those parts with an equal want of interest and an equal degree of inefiiciency.
